Generosity Comes in More Forms than One

Image
When speaking about generosity, what first comes to mind? For many, generosity is measured by a price tag, but this shouldn’t be the case. Not having monetary means should not equal a lack of generosity, there are other, much more meaningful, ways to give.   Knowing how to listen is generous... Taking time to listen, to give time and to devote attention to a person is an act of generosity. When listening to this person, you should always be one hundred percent with them, forgetting yourself for a moment and giving all the attention you have to give. What’s more generous than showing those around us that we are dependable and available—in short that we are there because we care. By listening to someone, you gain a sense of purpose, as you are doing something good for someone. And what’s more rewarding than knowing we’ve done the right thing and are someone who takes care of his friends! Immediate gratification on your side and appreciation on the receiving side are the res...

Practicing Optimism for an Optimal State of Mind

Image
Life can be seen with realism, optimism or pessimism. Research shows that most people, have a tendency to be either upbeat or pessimistic. Research also shows that optimism is linked to better performance, less stress, better health and longevity. Even if you’re born with the negative inclinations, it is possible to train yourself to practive the optimistic view to some extent. Optimism and pessimism rely on different thinking styles to explain the events of life, such as successes and failures. These thought styles are also closely related to self-confidence and self-esteem. Optimistic thinking : Optimists explain positive events as having occurred because of them (an internal cause). They see these events as indications that they are able to ensure that other positive things happen in the future and in other areas of their lives. Their self-confidence is enhanced by positive events. Conversely, they tend to see negative events as not their fault (external cause). They ...

Building Your Strength from Critics

Image
If you are looking to achieve some personal evolvement and improvement, you must come to to terms with the fact that constructive criticism is a good thing. Nobody enjoys being criticized, often times it makes us feel bad. But in order to progress in our personal and professional lives, we must learn to accept it. What is your first reaction to criticism? Do you, like most people, turn to defense mode? It's easy to put up our guard when someone tries to tell us something that even if it’s for our own good, is not the most easy thing to hear. In order to achieve personal and/or professional achievements in whatever you do, you must avoid responding negatively to criticism and start learning to listen. Listen to the critics and consider their words precious. Use them to learn, grow, and do things better. Of course, we are not always judged fairly or appropriately, so some criticism can be less than valuable, but accepting it anyways is an important skill to have. ...

Seeking Long Term Happiness

Image
What is the key to ultimate happiness? An accomplished career? Finding your soulmate? Being spiritually sound? Many people claim to have found the key and are willing to share it with the rest of the world (for a hefty price tag sometimes!), but what happens when you try this “solution” and it doesn’t work? Are you doomed to an unfulfilling life void of the well-deserved joy every good person should be entitled to? Unfortunately there is no one size fits all, immediately gratifying solution that I can enlighten you with, but I can say that a frantic search for fulfillment will probably not do the trick. The truth is, usually the things that we think will make us happy are not actually what we truly need...in reality most of us have no idea what we really “need”, but instead have ideals of perfect realities we would like to imitate. Instead of spending your days trying to find what’s “missing”, try concentrating instead on what’s there.  Gratitude and appreciation for wh...

Kindness vs. naivete

Image
Kindness is a quality, amongst others such as humility, generosity, tolerance, etc. Unfortunately, society has lost so much of its moral bearings that this quality is considered today, if not as a defect, at least as a weakness. It is therefore perceived, at best as naivety, and at worst as silliness. In the eyes of many people, it has even become abnormal, if not suspicious, to be kind. This reflects the "hardening" that has occurred in human relationships over the past few decades. What does kindness entail exactly? In general, it is the attitude which consists of being amicable and sympathetic towards others—this amicability and sympathy must be sincere and never with alternative motives. It is also to be helpful and attentive, and not indifferent to others. Kindness includes many qualities that facilitate life in society and make it more pleasant. As time goes on, feelings of insecurity and the value of individualism prevailing in society have unfortunately mad...

When "Wrong" is all in Your Head

Image
We are all born with the gift of purity—no predisposed opinions or biases to stop us from coming into this world as a completely clean slate. Unfortunately this precious birthright is snatched away from all of us not long after our lives start to progress as we are exposed to many different types of people and experiences. Our minds are quickly molded into something closely resembling the environment around us and often times we act not out of our own free will, but in learnt behaviors that respond to societal norms and expectations.   We don’t get to choose the surroundings we start out in, and for a varying (or perpetual for some) amount of time, are not capable of viewing life from any perspective other than the reality we exist in. Until the day comes that we experience a new environment that requires modifying our behavior (and for some this day never comes), and as long as our basic physical and emotional needs are met, there seems to be no primitive factor that necess...

Why Argue?

Image
Seems that everywhere we look, there is nothing but arguing going on. Take one look at social media, at the news, in your email inbox...full of arguments, from politics to work to personal matters. There’s nothing wrong with sharing your opinion and having a healthy debate here and there, but when you start to argue more often than not…....it’s time to ask yourself what’s going on. The first question to ponder is : what is it exactly that’s driving you to stir up this controversy? Is your goal to make your voice heard on an issue you feel truly passionate about? Is it the people making the initial statements that you’re craving a dispute with? Do you just flat-out enjoy conflict? The reason behind this desire can reveal a lot about your current needs, which correspond directly to your overall state of well-being. Then, what’s your arguing style? Do you have a genuine interest in hearing what the other side has to say, or are you there strictly to voice what you want and make...
